Orchid Sold to M & B

Posted on Monday, 30 June 2014 20:10

The Orchid Group owners of the Ship Inn and Black Horse Rainhill, The Waterside Carr Mill and The Woodlands in Haresfinch has been sold to Mitchell’s and Butlers. They are taking 173 freeholds from the group paying £266 million whilst leaving the leasehold pubs behind in a rump group. This ends a long period of uncertainty for the pubs as the Orchid Group itself has been technically bankrupt for some time finally being owned by the Detuche Bank who were keen to offload  the group. M & B are keen to rebrand some of the pubs into their own brands and have earmarked £35 million for renovations over the next 2 years. It is not yet known how this affects our local pubs

Packed Out- 3rd Annual St Helens CAMRA Awards Night

Posted on Sunday, 25 May 2014 10:12

Friday 23rd May 2014 saw the 3rd Annual St Helens CAMRA awards night in a very full and popular pub (just like years ago when pubs were like this all the time). Members of St Helens CAMRA were joined by representatives of Liverpool, Wigan and Wirral branches as well as many regulars from The Cricketers itself to celebrate Andy, Denise and Barbara's great achievement this year in winning the Pub of the Year Award. For their part the management of The Cricks put on a mini beer festival and free cider tasting plus a Laurel and Hardy tribute act. As a branch we would like to thank everyone who came along and made it such a great night.

Branch Awards Evening 2014

Posted on Saturday, 03 May 2014 13:04

This years awards night is Friday 23rd May 2014 and we hope to see you all there to celebrate the great pubs and beer we have in the St Helens and Prescot areas. There are several awards to give out but the main one is the POTY which will be presented to the Cricketers as a reward for all their hard work transforming a struggling keg only pub into a vibrant community local with 7 ales on from local microbreweries.

Everything starts at 7.30 in the Cricketers with Andy, Denise and Barbara making a full weekend of it by holding a mini beer festival to coincide with the presentation evening. I am sure it will be a great night and we would like as many members (and non members and people who might just like to try real ale for the first time) as possible to come and celebrate with us.
