We are holding a presentation night in the Cricketers Arms Peter Street on 25/09/2015. This should be a great night. All members are encouraged to attend to help us celebrate the success of this excellent pub.
Great news for the Branch and the real ale drinker in St Helens is that The Cricketers Arms on Peter St is the Merseyside and Cheshire Regional Pub of the Year for 2015. Well done to Andy Barbara and Denise for scooping this award it is a testament to the hard work and vision you have put in over the last couple of years. Good luck in the national voting
The next branch meeting will be in the Bird i'th'and on Prescot Road. 8pm start all members welcome
A great day was had at our crown green bowling competition in 18th July 2015. In a keenly fought competition the St Helens branch came from behind to win the inaugural Geoff Almond Cup. Our thanks go to Geoff for donating the cup, Liverpool CAMRA for being excellent oponents and Adam and Kylie from the Brown Edge for being such excellent hosts. We look forward to renewing our rivalry at next year's event.
Great news for the town and the branch as The Cricketers Arms has scooped the Champion Pub of Merseyside award beating off competition from Gallaghers in Birkenhead, The Freshfield (last year's national POTY runner up) and the Liverpool Pigeon. Congratulations on a job very well done go to Andy Denise and Barbara. The next stage is the Regional POTY where the Cricks will be up against HOPS Belgian Beer Bar in Crewe. We wish them the very best of luck and are keeping our fingers crossed.
Saturday 18th July starting at 1pm we are playing Liverpool and Southport CAMRA branches at crown green bowls to try and highlight the number of bowling greens lost from behind pubs over the years and to encourage people to have a go. So 3 local branches will assemble at the Brown Edge and have a thoroughly good afternoon of bowls and pints. Good weather is on order so it should be a very enjoyable day all round. So if you fancy trying your hand at bowls or fancy trying real ale or would like to just meet up with other CAMRA members locally please come down and see us. The more the merrier
The next St Helens CAMRA branch meeting is scheduled to be in the Brasserie Chalon on Barrow Street. Since the meeting was arranged there has been a change of management there so if there is no real ale on or it is closed we have decided to have a reserve venue which is The Nelpn on Bridge St.
Some great news for the branch as we presented our Branch Cider Pub of the Year award. We were able to make it a double presentation as our Regional Cider Co-ordinator Linda Harris revealed that The Cricketers on Peter St had also won the Regional Cider Pub of the Year Award (which covers Merseyside and Cheshire). Well done to all involved and good luck in the super regional round of judging.
The next branch meeting will take place at the Brown Edge Nutgrove on June 10th starting at 8pm. This meeting will be slightly different as we are aiming to highlight the demise of bowling greens behind pubs so we intend to use our meeting to have a practice before our match with Liverpool CAMRA on July 18th. Anyone interested should come along preferably with a set of bowls but we have some you can lend if you just want to have a go.
A great night was had at The Cricketers for our annual awards night. Just goes to show what a great place for a pint St Helens is with some cracking pubs. The assembled throng celebrated in style setting a new record for the amount of real ale consumed in a day.
